Wiki software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wiki software is a type of collaborative software that runs a Wiki system.
The primary difference between wikis and more complex types of content management systems is that wiki software tends to focus on the content, at the expense of the more powerful control over layout seen in CMS software like Drupal, WebGUI, or at the expense of non-wiki features (articles, blogs,..) like in Tikiwiki.
"Wiki software" could be interpreted as comprising all of the software required to run a wiki, which might include a web server such as Apache, in addition to the "Wiki engine" itself, which implements the wiki technology.

"Wiki wiki" means "fast" in the Hawaiian language, and it is the speed of creating and updating pages that is one of the defining aspects of wiki technology.
In traditional wikis, every page has two representations: the form in which it is displayed (usually HTML/XHTML versions, rendered by a web browser) and the form in which it is edited (a simplified markup language, the style and syntax of which varies from wiki to wiki, called "wikitext").
Adminstrators of wikis can also ban a user from editing, which can be accomplished by banning their particular IP address or their username.

Wiki: Social Software   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser.
But the fact is ["wikis work"]- at least, they work well in a small community of like-minded people.
Many wikis do have some sort of "control." Some only allow a selected group of people to edit the document while others allow the the owner or the community to verify the content before it is published.

To make money from software, the license holder (maker of the software) must have a method of ensuring that the only people who utilise their software are the same people who have purchased it.
The concept behind Shareware is that person A downloads a copy of the software off of the internet and is then free to distribute it to persons B, and C who can then distribute it further.
A full version is distributed, with partial functionality, or a timer that locks the software after a set period of time, or that simply uses popups at startup or during functioning to encourage the user to pay to remove the annoyances.

Meatball Wiki: SocialSoftware   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A different approach to the definition of Social Software was taken by Tom Coates in a post about [cyborgisation and augmentation] when he argued that a useful working definition might simply constitute the aumentation of human's socialising and networking abilities by software, complete with ways of compensating for the overloads this might engender.
Near the end of 2002, the term "social software" was gaining ground due mostly to the efforts of ClayShirky, the [iSociety] project, and the [The O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference 2003].
My thought in adopting social software (which I think Doc Searls invented, but am not really sure) as a term is to highlight the existence of a class of software for supporting interacting groups of people, which class contains various of the categories of software, from GroupWare to MailingLists to BulletinBoardSystem to Wikis.

Due to their qualities and attractiveness, wikis are now widely spread on the web, especially in the software community, run on many different platforms, and are being used to serve different kinds of contents and documents of different knowledge domains.
Although its current limitations for satisfying all the specific requirements of documenting software, wikis are already very helpful on supporting the collaborative edition and maintenance of software documentation, but much more can be probably done with a wiki in order to make them an unavoidable tool in software development.
The wiki (this or another one) will be kept alive after the workshop in hopes of continuing the discussion and collaboration.
