Scottish clan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Scottish clans give a sense of identity and shared descent to people in Scotland and to their relations throughout the world, with a formal structure of Clan Chiefs officially registered with the court of the Lord Lyon, King of Arms which controls the heraldry and Coat of arms.
Clans identify with geographical areas originally controlled by the Chiefs, usually with an ancestral castle, and clan gatherings form a regular part of the social scene.
The clans emerged from the turmoil of the 12th century and 13th century when the Scottish crown pacified northern rebellions and re-conquered areas taken by the Norse, and after the fall of Macbeth the crown became increasingly Anglo-Norman.

Scottish clan. Who is Scottish clan? What is Scottish clan? Where is Scottish clan? Definition of Scottish clan. ...
The Scottish clan system owes much to the ancient Celtic and Norse settlers in the northern parts of Scotland and, as part of the Gaelic tribal culture, was well established in the Highlands by as early as the 13th century.
Each clan was a large group of geographically-related people, originally an extended family, supposedly descended from one progenitor, and all owing allegiance to the patriarchal clan chief.
The revival of interest in the clans is due in no small part to the writings of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), as well as to the visit of George IV to Edinburgh in 1822, both of which contributed to a reawakening of Scottish culture and pride.

For a clan, it's unlikely that the tartan was chosen unless the clan didn't have a tartan until very recently.
For older clan tartans, the tartan was possibly associated with the area where the clan was based (because weavers in the area used it as a kind of trademark) and it became associated with the clan as a result.
