The main advantage of subpages is that they make it easy to group related topics together without having to establish context for each of them.
Subpages tend to get neglected and not follow style guidelines, and there are often far more subpages for a particular article than necessary.
Many of the problems with subpages are specific to an encyclopedia, and subpages may work perfectly for other wikis.

It was I who wrote that, in an attempt to be fair to the issue, even though I'm pro subpages.
This is the counter-point to the subpages create-a-hierarchy argument.
The arguments against them are far stronger than the arguments for them; the arguments for them have many flaws, and the proponents of subpages have yet to point out any significant flaws in several of the most important arguments against them.

Wikipedia talk:Do not use subpages : Wikipedia subpages pros and cons/Evaluation
We see, by examining actual uses of subpages, that the issue of dubious hierarchy almost never arises; when it does arise - and that, I repeat, almost never happens in practice - it should simply be taken as evidence that this particular subpage should be converrted to a page of its own.
The argument would be an argument against subpaging in general only if it could be shown that in a substantial number of existing uses of subpages the hierarchy isn't clear and is arbitrary.
To use an analogy from Middle-earth, the resurrected subpages would be like Lúthien redivivus - they would sit quietly in their assigned corner, rather than running loose in the wiki and doing all sorts of crazy things.

 FeatureRequests/DiscussionAndOrCommentPages - MoinMoin
If discussions are implemented as seperate pages, it should also be trivial to display an associated (sub)page with discussions as an 'included page' so that those who want it can still have the discussion visible directly on the 'main page'.
Another solution that might be considered is the creation of a 'Discussions' tree of subpages that more or less copies the wikis structure in a seperate tree with discussion pages for every 'real' page in the wiki that needs one.
As the names of the subpages in the tree follow the original page names the issue is probably only with the base name.

Wikimedia Foundation - Wikipedia - Balkanium
The obvious pro is that it has quiet a lot of info and it's free of charge and the evident con would be the fact that anyone can edit it.
however, if you have monitored wikipedia a bit, you should know that there are professional editors who dont let anything be written in there.
because of such cases, i think wikipedia should be read and studied, but not presented as a "source" (not it, nor clone sites).

What are the pros and cons to use MediaWiki or MoinMoin?
I want some pages and subpages not to be readable by everybody.
Because MoinMoin is in Python (maybe that is not an obvious reason for everybody, but in the end, it all comes down to this).

 Wikiversity - Meta Collab
However, it is a sociological phenomenon that those people who feel the need to narrowly specialize will focus their energies and find ways to exclude anyone/anything that does not fit a narrow definition of a wiki’s mission.
During the time that Wikiversity was being removed from the Wikibooks project, there was some discussion of the pros and cons of having Wikiversity as a Wikimedia project.
If this is worked well (and it is all down to groupwork dynamics and constant monitoring by the facilitator), the students will take charge of the activity and it will usually have more meaning for them than something which is learned through the simple description of the field/subject/theory.

There are pros and cons of each, but I think we need to decide on a consistent method and use that throughout.
Well, I was thinking about moving the pages to the manual namespace once I updated the schema fully and documented it properly, like I did with the Hitcounter table.
Ok, move them to subpages, but I think it would be nicer (for backwards compatibilty and historical reasons) to make Hitcounter table be Manual:Database layout/Hitcounter table, instead of creating Manual:Schema and its ilk.

 Help:Link - Owner's Document
A page with a name of the form A/b is considered a so-called "subpage" of the page A. From the parent page it can be linked to with simply [[/b]] or the corresponding piped link.
At the top of the subpage body a link to the parent page is shown automatically, without any corresponding wikitext.
When repairing a link during disambiguation, for example when renaming the article Mercury to Mercury (planet), you can use empty pipe syntax so that the link does not contain the new parenthesized qualifier.

Each candidate is given space to explain themselves and their positions, and each ballot item allowed space for the text of the item, a pro and con view, as well as pro's response to con and con's response to pro.
The result is that voters have a reasonable set of data at their disposal when they go into the ballot box on election day.
