 2004-September.txt
Since people from as many wikimedia projects as possible should be able to participate we decided on Europe as the best place to do this, and we'll be trying to get funding for wikipedians from other continents to join in the fun.
So, given that the trend is the exact opposite of what you claim it is, I can either deduce that you know nothing about Wikimedia's history, or that you are living in a parallel universe superimposed over own where time runs in the opposite direction.
Hello Anthere, I can help with translating from French after March (since I'll be in France, and know more then), but for now, I can help translate to German and Anglo-Saxon.

In preparing for this (otherwise most welcome) sort of invasion, it would help if we had something akin to a (humorous) "Fire Department," where, when "war" or "flooding" (i.e., the aforementioned media-induced invasion of new contributors) strikes, the "firefighters" are called out to very nicely assimilate and bring under control problematic newbies.
This weeding should focus not on each other's work, but on the new contributors' stuff, and particularly the work of the "clueless" new contributors.
Through these actions the slashdot effect was weathered: the servers became significantly slower, but did not crash, and while there was some increase in vandalism, particularly on articles related to slashdot, it was not significant.

As well as calling out the fire department on wikipedia:announcements and the mailing lists, various technical measures were taken to reduce the load on the servers.

Open Source Intelligence (Anders Jacobsen's blog)
Please do consider going to www.osint.meetup.com and signing up for a local OSINT meeting that is intended to help bring together LOCAL cross-fertilizing groups from national, military, law enforcement, business, academic, NGO-media, and citizen-labor-religion--what I call the seven tribes of intelligence.
But I suspect that their interest in the more grass roots Internet goings-on are more for the purpose of gathering intelligence than for the purpose of particularly doing anything for the world at large.
For all Robert Steele says he cannot even make a web page, go to one of his confrences and you'll see what a bunch of crap that is all about, he would not be able to get anywhere on his own, burns more bridges then anyone I've ever met.

Wikipedia and the rise of Participatory Journalism
However, the advent of participatory journalism has provided a unique solution to this problem ¡V it engages the news audience to participate in the process of rationalizing Web content, crafting the news and contributing knowledge into the ¡§media ecology¡¨.
Web logs and bulletin boards are examples of this, by calling on audience feedback and contributions to help put stories in context.
