[Wikipedia-l] Why the free encyclopedia movement needs to be more like the freesoftware movement
Either the free software community will develop means and methods of orienting newcomers effectively, or they will get discouraged and move on.
It is pretty clear that if the free software movement was not pretty friendly towards new developers it would not have grown or been successful.
Although the expertise developed is valuable in the long term, the community grows because people interested in software development enjoy working within the various teams and with the individuals who comprise the overall community.

 The Wikipedia Militia - Wikipedia
As some people already mentioned, such military wording is likely to scare newcomers, and this 'Militia' thing won't serve any purpose above and beyond simply posting a call to action for everyone to the mailing list and placing a notice at the top of RecentChanges.
This weeding should focus not on each other's work, but on the new contributors' stuff, and particularly the work of the "clueless" new contributors.
But we might indeed get a lot of publicity and that could have some ill effects we might want to be prepared for.

Talk:International logo vote (archive) - From Meta; discussion about Wikimedia projects
But things are proceeding quick, japanese wikipedia is currently receiving massive newcomers due to a major press coverage, and there is very few (well, virtually only me) who informs others of inter-lingual/project-wide issues.
One thing is the personal preference of masses of people, the other is a professional decision which logo would be best for wikipedia, meaning best at modern needs of advertising and become more known.
And my assumption is that we should take this voting and selection process seriously -- respect the expressed preferenecs of the voters (to the extent they seems to reflect the will of the all wikipedias), and value unity among this diverse wikipedians (to the extent it is achievable).

NPOV, or neutral point of view means that articles should not be biased, and should represent differing views on a subject fairly.
You may find this a bit intimidating at first, but see replies to common objections for an explanation of why the system still works.

I think that perhaps the point to consider the inclusion >of a new dialect wikipedia would be better moving around the >exclusionist-inclusionist poles.
We want to make it easy for newcomers to get excited and build, while at the same time trying to keep from having too many dead wikis around.
IMO "we" should apply at least for wikipedia.eu and wikimedia.eu.

Wikipolitics: Part 1 at Forever Geek
For those of you who aren't familiar with wikipedia, or, if you read pages from it sometimes, but haven't been involved with its editing, or even if you are a veteran wikipedian who is curious as to the reaction of a new member, I am going to share my experiences and observations.
I think the nature of the wikipedia encourages this type of participation, initially, and the result has a profound effect on how one responds to discovering the community of editors.
It is advised that wiki-veterans not bite the newcomers, but, understandably, sometimes their tone can be hostile when they've had to correct the same error hundreds of times or deal with the same misunderstanding repeatedly.

 [Wikipedia-l] Indoctrinating (was Educating) newcomers
You make it sound as though the only thing you need to do is to insure that Lir does everything "our" way, and that newcomers should not be re-opening debates because we settled that a year ago before these newcomers came aboard.
This will be especially true for naming conventions.
If Lir or any newcomer comes along and questions one of our conventions, that opinion deserves respect just as much as the opinions of long-standing contributors.
