Wikiversity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wikiversity's beta phase officially began on August 15th, 2006 with the English language Wikiversity.
Wikiversity participants express their learning goals and the Wikiversity community collaborates to develop learning activities and projects to accommodate those goals.
Wikiversity could act as a repository of research carried out by the Wikimedia Research Network or others who are involved in wiki-based research.

 Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2006-08-07/Wikiversity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wikiversity was approved by 69.8% of voters in November 2005, reaching the two-thirds majority required to submit the proposal to the Wikimedia board.
Wikiversity would contain materials useful for learning that do not fit into Wikibooks' specific area (textbooks).
Very little information is yet known about how Wikiversity will be launched, and exactly when the launch would occur, but many of the details are being worked on the meta-wiki.

 Wikiversity - Meta
Wikiversity is a beta project of the Wikimedia Foundation, located at http://en.wikiversity.org/.
Wikiversity could become much more than "yet another university" - it has the potential for rethinking the mode of education itself, or, at least, for furthering the model of collaborative education that is taking hold of the progressive educative community.
Fundamentally though, the scope of a Wikiversity course, whether it is purely research-led or about practical training, or what the age group and/or level of the course should be, should be up to the course teacher/facilitator, and be allowed to grow naturally according to its own need.

 Wikiversity:About - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
Wikiversity is not a place for users to publish content unrelated to our main objective, which is to develop open-content learning processes which can be delivered or prepared for via self study over the public internet.
Wikiversity is not a vehicle for advertising and self-promotion.
Wikiversity might not be the place to publish primary research, such as proposing new theories and solutions, original ideas (other than ideas for online wiki learning), defining new terms, coining words, etc - although some research may be conducted as part of a course like sociology, for example.

The Wikiversity project proposal was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees and announced at Wikimania 2006.
Wikiversity had previously been under development at Wikibooks.
Due to the huge amount of Wikiversity pages in the Spanish domain of Wikibooks, it is not very encouraging to bring all that to v:Beta if soon afterwards we have to move it again to v:es: It doesn´t really make much sense.

Wikiversity - time to vote - FLOSSE Posse
Wikiversity should also aim to have academic activities of which 95% are good enough for 95% of people.
Wikiversity should be an institution that is doing research and involving younger generation to this process.
Naturally, in the Wikiversity there should be a huge language school that is giving language course for students who do not have the required language skills but are still interested in to study there.

During the time that Wikiversity was being removed from the Wikibooks project, there was some discussion of the pros and cons of having Wikiversity as a Wikimedia project.
The discussion of Wikiversity that was given in the sections above was written in October 2005 in the middle of the vote that was held on the original Wikiversity project proposal.
Wikiversity should be a grand adventure of discovery for its participants as they discover just what can be done with free information and the wiki interface.

As Wikiversity becomes established and matures beyond its initial dependencies on other Wikimedia projects, there are a number of services and projects that Wikiversity could come to manage.

I noted with interest when the Wikiversity project started up last year some time, wondering how quickly it would develop, and if the emphasis entirely on content rather than process (roughly an opposite position to that taken by Ultraversity) would prove problematic.
Whether or not Wikiversity will be started in your language will be determined separately if this vote succeeds and if the board approves the project.
Existing Wikiversity projects in languages other than English and German will continue on Wikibooks as a temporary home, and development can continue there until after this beta period is over.

The first project, Wikiversity, is just what it sounds like - a wiki-based learning environment where students from around the world will be able to enroll in free courses that utilize free curricula.
They expect to launch a six-month testbed for the project within the next month, but you can already take a look at the Wikiversity workspace to get a sense of where the project is headed.
So far, the wikimaniacs involved in the site (wikifessors, perhaps?) have laid the groundwork for more than two dozen virtual schools, including a school of chemistry, a school of philosophy, a school of journalism, even an interdisciplinary school of practical human life, which in itself covers everything from waste management to plumbing to nutrition.

One of the topics being discussed is if we should propose to Wikimedia community that the Wikiversity should be an independent project from Wikibooks, with or without another domain name (for example.wikiversity.org).
Actually, eventhough Wikiversity may/should use Wikibooks to create didactic material, different departments may be involved in other Wikimedia projects.

 [Foundation-l] Wikiversity Re-launch
Due to a major misunderstanding about the whole issue about the role of Wikiversity on Wikibooks, I am doing a "Re-launch" of Wikiversity as an ordinary new Wikimedia "sister project".
I already added Wikiversity to the new project proposal page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_new_projects#Wikiversity I think that the initial scope of Wikiversity can and should be toned down to something realistic that can be accomplished with the current set of tools available with MediaWiki software.
What the fate of Wikiversity ought to be if it fails to become a Wikimedia sister project is up to further discussion, but I don't think it ought to stay on Wikibooks.

I sure hope something like this or some of the emerging globus grid components and/or utilities turn out to be useful at distributing workload in case the Board decides a free online university is too challenging in terms of explosive demand growth upon the overstrained Wikimedia Foundation's server farm.
It would be cool if it turned out a properly implemented Wikiversity Grid could scale with each new serious participant's loan of a few meg and gig via a screensaver until they needed.

On a Wikiversity Web site, Cormac Lawler, a doctoral candidate in education at the University of Manchester, in England, says the mission of Wikiversity is to use the open-source model -- based on software that anyone is free to modify -- to develop learning materials, teach, conduct research, and publish.
The Wikiversity Web site says the proposed enterprise "could become much more than 'yet another university' -- it has the potential for rethinking the mode of education itself, or, at least, for furthering the model of collaborative education."
It decided that Wikiversity would not be a host for online courses or promote itself as a degree-granting institution.

"The Wikiversity's School of Business is the online community's center of business education that is committed to teach and educate the online community in all matters related to business.
