Wilbur C. Sweatman (Brunswick, Missouri, February 7, 1882 - New York City March 9, 1961) was an African-American ragtime and jazz composer, bandleader, and clarinetist.
Sweatman moved to New York in 1913, where he became close friends with Scott Joplin, and Joplin named Sweatman as executor of his estate in his will.
Sweatman enjoyed popularity with both White and Black audiences in New York, and started issuing recordings in 1916 for Emerson Records, then for Pathé.

 Wilbur Sweatman
Sweatman gets my vote for being the first African-American to record Jazz, but he is remembered less as a jazz musician and more as a great showman famous for playing at first two then three clarinets at once.
In the 1930s Sweatman was active in music publishing and was the executor of Scott Joplin's estate.
Unfortunately after Sweatman's death in 1961, Joplin's estate fell into disarray and many unpublished and original manuscripts were lost.

Joplin's musical papers, including unpublished manuscripts, were willed to Joplin's friend and the executor of his will, musician and composer Wilber Sweatman.
Sweatman took care of these papers and generously shared access to them to those who enquired.
After Sweatman's death in 1961 the papers were last known to go into storage during a legal battle among Sweatman's heirs; their current location is not known, nor even if they still exist.

He left Washington with Sonny Greer and Toby Hardwicke to join the so-called symphonic swing band of Wilber Sweatman in New York City.
After a short and unhappy stay with Sweatman they struggled to survive on their own for a few months.
Ellington returned to Washington but in the spring of 1923 he was persuaded by Fats Waller to move back to Manhattan.

After World War I Emerson started ambitious expansions of the business, and in 1919 finally introduced a line of 10 inch discs (the common industry standard) retailing for 85 cents, which went up to $1 each the following year.
At the same more popular "big name" artists were hired to record for the label, including Wilber Sweatman, Eddie Cantor, the Six Brown Brothers, and the Louisiana Five.
Somewhat later the label also recorded Lizzie Miles, Eubie Blake, Fletcher Henderson, and the Original Memphis Five.

As to when Ellington actually got started, we go to John Edward Hasse, in his book BEYOND CATEGORY: THE LIFE AND GENUIS OF DUKE ELLINGTON (1993), we have more details to summarize:
"Ellington went to New York in March 1923 to play in Wilber Sweatman's band, along with his Washington DC buddies, Sonny Greer and Otto Hardwick.
When Sweatman went on the road, Ellington, Greer, and Hardwick stayed in New York; they worked a few gigs, but did not find steady work; they returned to Washington D.C."
