The Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, (15 June 1911 – 21 March 1997) was a clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, best known as the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine.
Awdry was born in Romsey, Hampshire in 1911.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1942 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles.

Wilbert Vere Awdry (1911 - 1997) was een Brits predikant, treinengek en auteur van jeugdliteratuur.
De karakters die hem wereldberoemd zouden maken, en de eerste verhalen waar ze een rol in speelden, bedacht hij in 1942 om zijn zoon Christopher te vermaken die de mazelen had.
Het eerste boek ('The Three railway engines') werd gepubliceerd in 1945, en toen Awdry in 1972 stopte met schrijven telde de serie over de spoorwegen 26 boeken.

Wilbert's wife Margaret, sensing that the stories could have a wider appeal, sent the scribbled words to a literary agent, and in 1945, the very first book, The Three Railway Engines, was published.
Wilbert Awdry's own railway knowledge was cultivated by his father, who had shown him how to use a telescope to spot trains on the GWR main line from the family home at Box, near Bath.
Wilbert Awdry's wife Margaret pre-deceased him in 1989.

One of the most celebrated children's authors of the twentieth century, the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry O.B.E. was born in 1911 in Hampshire, England.
Wilbert used to lie in bed at night, listening to the trains and imagining that the engines were talking to each other.
Ordained in 1936, Wilbert Awdry served in a number of parishes for nearly thirty years until the popularity of the Railway Series enabled him to go into "private practice" and concentrate on his writing and research.

The stories were first created by an Anglican clergyman, the Reverend Wilbert Awdry, as a way of entertaining his young son Christopher as he recovered, in isolation, from scarlet fever.
Awdry drew simple pictures of steam locomotives on the paper along with the stories.
The connection was made so suddenly that the Rev. Awdry had to send the stories as they were written on scraps of paper as the original manuscript.

Wilbert Awdry was one of the earliest members of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society and was a volunteer guard on the line in the 1950's.
The events and happenings which feature in the Skarloey series actually happened to Wilbert Awdry when he was working on the Talyllyn as a volunteer.
The contents of his study - including the desk at which he wrote the stories were bequeathed to the Talyllyn Railway, and his study has been re-created in the new museum building.
