He is trying to break our hearts - Salon
Wilco had not yet been dubbed one of the few American rock bands that matter; that label was cemented when Reprise Records rejected its minimalist masterpiece, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" as unworthy of release -- it found a new home and was quickly dubbed a classic.
In '96, Tweedy and his Chicago-based band were better known as the torchbearers for the burgeoning alt-country scene built around American bands like the Bottle Rockets, Son Volt, the Silos, Vulgar Boatmen, the Jayhawks, Old 97's and Whiskeytown, who shouted their barroom choruses while also exploring the softer side of life.
In a matter of months, with the release of the ambitious and mostly melancholy "Being There," it would become obvious to everyone that Wilco was never going to become a feel-good American jukebox the way Petty and his Heartbreakers were in the '80s and '90s.

batkins, i respect your opinion in that post-yhf wilco might be a bit less 'country,' 'alt country' or whatever you'd like to call it, but to say it has "hardly anything to do with country" is a point of gargantuan contention, especially after hearing a few new songs live on their last tour.
The thing keeping me away from Wilco is the word "country" in their genre.

The alternative country band Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rockers Uncle Tupelo, who disbanded in 1994.
Wilco 's sophomore effort, 1996's two-disc set Being There, marked a radical transformation in the group's sound; while remaining steeped in the style that earned Tweedy his reputation, the songs took unexpected detours into psychedelia, power pop, and soul, complete with orchestral touches and RandB horn flourishes.
In 1998, Wilco collaborated with singer/songwriter Billy Bragg on Mermaid Avenue, a collection of performances based on unreleased material originally written by Woody Guthrie.

Wilco is the band for such consumers; and to help them along, critics have provided the word "deconstruction." Deconstruction is now rock-press shorthand for the crumbling of the traditional Intro Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Bridge Solo Verse Chorus song structure.
Deconstruction is currently doing for Wilco (and Radiohead before it) what it did for literary studies in the '70s and '80s: providing a sense of pomp and excitement during a period of near-total marginalization.

Last time around, Wilco were dropped by Reprise Records because songwriter Jeff Tweedy and mixer Jim O'Rourke baked all sorts of buzzes and creaks into the songs on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
On A Ghost Is Born, Wilco take their Beatlesque aspirations and throw it in a blender with The Replacements, Crazy Horse, The Band and Radiohead for an album that is often difficult to understand but none the less brillant in its scope and ambition.

Tweedy can hardly be faulted for doing the same, particularly in an era of such fluffy, unimportant sonic trifle, courtesy of a conference room-ful of three-piece Swedish suits who write music for thirty-plus men posing as "boy" bands, and for bleached blondes with no vocal talent other than aping faux-R and B mellismas.
Wilco is basically just a really soft band that could use a bit more pep if you ask me. I tend to like soft music just fine, but the songs on this CD simply don't have good melodies to offer.

Wilco (originally Wilcoe), on Farm Road 2587 in extreme northeastern Hartley County, was founded in 1909 by the brothers James Edward and Frank B. Wilson, ranchers and land developers who came with their families from Effingham, Kansas.
Wilco was one of the townsites included in the proposed Enid, Ochiltree, and Western Railroad line, and the tracks were laid from Dalhart to Wilco before the railroad plans fell through.
Service on this line continued until 1911, however, and later on it was connected with a spur of the Rock Island line to Pringle in Hutchinson County.

With the personal and artistic journey the band and Tweedy have recently emerged from, it's no small wonder that fans and critics alike have continued to recognize the band’s work as both important and genuine.
In the wake of its cancelled tour dates, Wilco chose a seemingly random bar in a tiny college town in rural Illinois to launch its world tour (upon further inspection, the band’s long-time sound man owns the bar).
The trio of new musicians—including Mikael Jorgensen on keys and laptop, and Pat Sansone on keys, guitar and vocals—consistently contributed to the backdrop of noise and sound effects that has come to typify the Wilco sound.
