Pea Ridge NMP: Federal Commanders - James "Wild Bill" Hickock   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Contrary to the myth, which has found its way into a number of publications and articles on the battle, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickcock was not present at Pea Ridge, nor was involved in any way with the Army of the Southwest.
The book, which the author claimed was based "entirely on fact", had "Buffalo Bill" Cody and his partner, Wild Bill, leading a company of scouts against a band of Missouri border ruffians led by Dave Tutt.
Dave Tutt and Wild Bill did have a "shoot out", although it was after the war, in a Springfield, Missouri street in the Wild West's first classic gunfight.

Question about Hickock's famous shootout? :: True West Magazine Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Wild Bill, according to witnesses to the shooting, layed his Navy Colt's barrel over his left arm for the shot to more precisely aim and he said in later interviews about the shooting that he "aimed quite high" because of the distance involved.
From everything I've read about Wild Bill he preferred the '51 Navy over all other guns, although he was known to carry on occasion such arms as the '61 Navy, the '60 Army and his back-up gun was a 41 caliber rim fire Remington over and under deringer carried in his vest pocket.
The night that Wild Bill shot Phil Coe and then accidentally shot his own deputy, one Mike Williams was the last time any shooting was attributed to Wild Bill.

Wild Bill features strong supporting performances by John Hurt (as a Hickock sidekick) and Ellen Barkin (as the tough, lusty Calamity Jane)--but the centerpiece is the sad, manly performance by Bridges, who more than measures up to the part.
Unfortunately, 'Wild Bill' abandons both the history and legend of James Butler Hickok for the greater part of the movie in favor of its own inovations on the tale that simply fall flat.
Jeff Bridges is magnificent as the eponymous "Wild Bill", he takes the overblown legend of Bill and breathes life into the man as myth and as character, the dream like direction of Hill fits the subject spot on.

One of poker's best-known legends is that of Wild Bill Hickcock, who made the mistake of playing poker in a gambling saloon in Deadwood in 1876.
A gambler called Jackie ‘Crooked Nose' McCall, who had been hired by other crooked gamblers to kill Hickcock because they feared he might be made marshal of Deadwood and clean up the game, walked in and shot Wild Bill in the back of the head with a Colt 45.
Bill died clutching his hand, which was found to be two Aces and two 8s (some say all fl), with the odd card either the Queen or Jack of diamonds.

We know of people who are wild about cats, wild about horses, wild about gardening and some of you may be wild about Harry.
And so to be wild about God not only means to love God so much that He is the focus of your life, but it also means that you hold nothing back from God, you love Him without reserve, with no limitations.
So not only can we be wild about God because of what He has done, but we can be wild about God because of who He is. Think of who He is. There is no other being on earth that is greater than God.

Interesting note; as a child, he had a protruding upper lip which is the reason he wore a mustache his whole life, and is partly responsible for his nickname of Wild Bill.
Apparently, children being what they are had named him Duck Bill because of this protruding lip, but as he grew older, it became readily apparent that he would be a rather large man by then standards.
