Bonasa Press | The Wild Ones
The Wild Ones is a book about wildness and birds and the relationships a variety of other things-particularly people-form with wild places and the magnificent wonderful grouse that inhabit North America's wild places.
Wild, as they originally intended the idea, described living in a "state of nature," not being ordinarily tamed or domesticated, and growing without human aid or care, like wild raspberries.
Wild also came to mean "uncivilized, barbaric, uncontrolled and unruly," all of these things describing a characteristic of wilderness, wildlife, or a simple or uncivilized society.

Where the wild ones are: origins of staple crop found
Using sophisticated DNA sequencing techniques that traced variation in a single gene found in cultivated and wild cassava, Schaal and Olsen have identified a cassava subspecies, still present in the diminishing wilds of the Amazon basin, as the plant's progenitor.
Their work also reveals a wealth of genetic diversity in wild and domesticated cassava strains, information that plant breeders can use to create hardier plants that are more resistant to disease.
In fine-tuning their sampling of wild populations, they found that cassava is derived from wild flabellifolia populations along the southern border of the Amazon basin.

 Wild Ones By Ria Hawk
There was once a tribe of humans that was referred to as "the Wild Ones." The Wild Ones evidently had a peculiar link to the natural world around them; each person born in the tribe had an affinity for a particular type of animal.
The Wild Ones differ mainly from the "spirit animal" concept in that the affinity is inborn, and as I understand it, spirit animals are actively sought and interacted with.
Cat Wild Ones may also be born blind, with their sight gradually developing over the first few weeks of life.

Do hatchery salmon help or harm the wild ones?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
For years, scientists have compiled evidence suggesting that the presence of hatchery-bred fish can be harmful to wild fish and that hatchery-bred fish are less able to survive in the long run than wild ones.
Wild fish usually come back over a period of several months, meaning at least some will probably avoid whatever disaster nature throws their way in any given year.
Hatcheries are notorious for taking fish adapted to one stream and hatching their progeny in another, meaning they may return to spawn, for example, when that particular stream is a raging flood and inhospitable to safe egg laying.

Mauritian Kestrel - Crécerelle - Kresserel - falco punctatus
At one point in the 1970's, the Mauritius Kestrels were the most endangered bird of prey in the world with a reported four surviving birds in the wild.
Since then, an intense conservation and captive breeding program was created by the Wildlife Preservation Trust in collaboration with the Mauritius government.
This program consists of feeding of wild birds, providing nestboxes, multiple clutching, egg pulling, artificial incubation, hand rearing and release of captive-bred and captive-reared birds by hacking, fostering, and predator control.
