Boeing: News Feature - F-4 Phantoms Phabulous 40th
A "Wild Weasel" is an aircraft that has been modified to identify, locate and physically suppress or destroy ground-based enemy air defense systems.
The original Wild Weasels were F-100F aircraft, which were developed to combat the increasing success of the anti-aircraft defense system of North Vietnam.
By 1975, the F-4G Phantom became the Wild Weasel.

Military History Online - The Wild Weasels in Vietnam
In July 1966, the original Wild Weasels in the F-100F flew their last missions in Vietnam, as it had been decided that the Super Sabre was to be phased out of Weasel operations in favor of the faster, and more durable F-105 Thunderchief.
The Weasels showed their bravery and courage time and again, and although it is hard to put an exact number on it, it is safe to say that the Weasels saved countless lives in the performance of their duties.
Wild Weasel missions were among the most perilous of the war, and Weasel losses were high.

 Gear Update: The X-45 UCAV
The Wild Weasel launches missiles that home in on the defense system's electromagnetic energy emissions -- in other words, if an anti-aircraft radar system is turned on for more than a few seconds, the Wild Weasel can use the radar's own signal to find and destroy it.
Welcome the new Weasel: the X-45 UCAV (Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle), a remotely operated stealthy aircraft that relies on its small size, infinitesimal radar cross section, and non-pilot limited maneuverability to approach, identify, and attack enemy air defenses with precision munitions.
The Weasels may skimp on size, but they're efficient when it comes to the engine: The X-45A demonstrator is powered by a single Honeywell F124-GA-100 6,300 pound thrust engine, while the X-45B fieldable prototype will be powered by one GE F404-102D 7,000 pound thrust engine.

A number of F-105F models were converted to the F-105G antiaircraft suppression configuration and designated "Wild Weasel." Pilots flying Wild Weasel missions were tasked with the most hazardous duty of all, attracting the attention of the air-defense sites and then launching missiles to destroy the enemy's radar systems.
For the Wild Weasel mission, the F-105G was armed with AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-78 Standard ARM missiles.
In 1967, the first F-105G Wild Weasels were assigned to the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing based at Tahkli Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand.

F-4G ANATOMY OF A WILD WEASEL
The latter phase of the Vietnam conflict saw an increase in Wild Weasel activity as the Communists deployed further and newer equipment.
These circumstances indicated that the new Advanced Wild Weasel would have to be capable of agile manoeuvring at low level to evade fighters and surface defences while delivering its air to ground weapons.
The USAF nominated the 1969-vintage Block 41 F-4E as the baseline airframe for the new Weasel and the designation EF-4E was adopted for the 116 conversions, this was subsequently changed to F-4G in view of the extent of the modification.

The purpose of the Wild Weasel missions in Air Force terms was to detect and destroy or suppress enemy radar sites that fired and controlled missiles against our strike force, which closely followed the Weasels into the target area.
In simpler terms, it was for the Weasels to make themselves the target, and when the enemy locked on them with their radars, to try to fire back before the enemy pulled the trigger.

The original "Wild Weasel I" was a modified tandem-seat F-100F Super Sabre, but this aircraft could not keep with strike packages, and amounted to a proof-of-concept system.
Late in the war, about 36 F-4Cs were modified to the "Wild Weasel IV" configuration, carrying radar detection and targeting systems along with the AGM-45 "Shrike" anti-radar missile (ARM), which was a Sparrow with a radar seeking head.
The Wild Weasel IV conversion left something to be desired, and after the war 116 F-4Es were converted into the "Wild Weasel V" or "Advanced Wild Weasel", which was given the "vacant" designation "F-4G".
