  Otway Online: Wild Willy Barrett
Willy has one other major redeeming feature as far as I am concerned, and that is his fascination with strange and bizarre instruments (one of my own pet fascinations).
From an early age Willy had taken a dislike to John, to the point of physical violence, so quite how they ever got together in the first place is a bit of a mystery.
I'm not entirely sure what Willy is up to at the moment, although he can sometimes be tracked down with his "friends" performing acoustic gigs.

Recorded following John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett's well-publicized summer 1978 split (Barrett wanted to watch the soccer World Cup; Otway wanted to tour in support of their latest album), Call of the Wild was the multi-instrumentalist Barrett's reminder of who really wore the creative trousers in the partnership.
From the Mad Willy's Tea Party sleeve on in, Call of the Wild is a masterpiece of both sound and vision.
In fact, the same can be said for the entire album -- in his best-known guise, after all, Wild Willy Barrett often appeared the ironically misnamed straight man to Otway's iconoclastic madness.

Originally self-released on their own Extracked label (after the duo was dropped by Track itself), John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett's 1976 debut album represents the purest of the pair's recordings, a selection of songs that represented every facet of their partnership, as opposed to the madcap antics that became their public persona.
The decades since John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett have seen both players keep up a steady barrage of new releases, individually and collectively, and all have their moments of sublime glory.

Wild Willy Barrett : Organic Bondage - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Best known for contributing the glorious "Focke Wulf" to Otway & Barrett's The Wimp and the Wild album, Stanton serves up the three finest songs on this disc: "Please Don't Throw Me to the Christians," "Tales from the Raj," and the expostulatory "Milton Keynes (We Love You)" ode to his own hometown.
Barrett's playing and arrangements throughout are exemplary -- just when you thought you never needed to hear another version of "Jack O'Diamonds" again, he serves up a real ripper, while "Moose Loose Kicking" is as great as its title suggests it should be.
Altogether, then, Organic Bondage is another in a succession of triumphs from Barrett, and the only disappointment there is that there should be many more of them.

Wild Willy used to drink in my local pub (near Aylesbury, UK) and would regale people with the stories of how he and John were going to become famous.
The moment of national fame was in 1977, on a slow music week, to the bemusement of the studio audience, they performed Really Free in the Top of the Pops studio.
I've seen John with and without Willy over the years and am amazed that he has never done himself serious damage with his onstage antics.

BOOKSHOP - E-BOOKS FOR THE DISCERNING ROCK FAN
Both individually and collectively, John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett did indeed endure an eventful career through the 1970s, but they’ve enjoyed even more eventful ones since then, and are still on the top of their game (whatever that may be) today.
The Armchair Guide is a series of books designed to aid and entertain both the serious collector and the curious fan, delivering up both comprehensive discography and lively commentary, while tracing the life and work of some of the most significant (and, in some instances, significantly under–biographed) artists of the rock’n’roll era.
THE WILD ONES traces the trajectory of that pram, from the band’s earliest days in the suburban hinterland, through the first years of crazed Britpop hysteria, and on to the tumult and turbulence through which Suede continued producing some of the most exhilarating music of the decade.
