  Wild card
Wild card: In playing card terms, a wild card is a card that can be assigned any value its holder desires.
A wild card can be a pre-assigned card, such as any 2 (deuce) or the jack of spades, for example, or a special card, usually one of the jokers.
In sport, the term wild card refers to a team that qualifies for that sporting league's (association; etc.) playoffs that is one of several high achieving teams that did not obtain the best win-loss record in their specific subdivision (usually called a conference or division) of that sporting league.

Golf (card game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Golf is not one, but two different card games where players try to earn the lowest number of points (as in golf, the sport) over the course of nine deals (or "holes" to further use golfing teminology).
The first is a form of solitaire with a tableau of 35 face-up cards and a higher ratio of skill to luck than most other solitaire card games.
Cards may be moved from the tableau to the foundation if they are either one rank higher or one rank lower than the top card of the foundation, regardless of suit, but nothing may be played on top of a King.

Another Great Season with the Wild Card
Before the Wild Card the playoffs were a four team affair and most of those slots would have been locked up already by the usual suspects - the Braves, Cardinals, Twins, and Yankees - who as usual are just figuring out the very best way to break the hearts of Red Sox Nation.
The wild card race in the NL involves the Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Astros, Cubs, Marlins and at least statistically the Phillies too.
While the main battle in the National League is for the Wild Card the Angels, Rangers and Red Sox are all struggling to unseat division favorites in the Yankee and A’s who've always seem to land atop their divisions in the immediate past.

The Daily Texan - Wild card harms baseball
Conveniently, the Cards were scheduled to face the Astros in what should have been a historic matchup of epic proportions, analogous to 1993's race between the Giants and the Braves for one postseason spot.
No, thanks to the baseball goons that introduced the wild card 7 years ago, a nation of future fans of America's pastime were forever robbed of the beauty of experiencing a pennant race.
Bear in mind that even with the addition of the wild card, the American League "pennant races" were decided weeks before the season's end, prompting even die-hard fans to become lackadaisical about a national pastime that was peaking in popularity before the 1994 strike.
