The musicians were not tied by very strong musical similarities, but a certain whimsicalness, touches of psychedelia, rather obtuse lyrics, and a use of improvisation derived from jazz are common elements in their work.
The scene had its roots in the Wilde Flowers, a band formed in 1964 which, at various times, was home to the founding musicians of both the Soft Machine and Caravan, bands which in turn provided the musicians of several later bands.
The genesis of the Canterbury Sound may, in part, be traced back to 1960, when Australian beatnik Daevid Allen lodged at Robert Wyatt's parents' guest-house in Lydden, ten miles to the south of Canterbury.

 Soft Machine - Index
At the center was a group called the Wilde Flowers, the initial line-up of which comprised Hugh Hopper, his brother Brian on saxes, Robert Wyatt, Richard Sinclair on guitar and Kevin Ayers - who had been recommended because he was the only other long-hair in Kent - on vocals.
Initially the new band's repertoire wasn't vastly different from that of the Wilde Flowers, but they soon became totally original, performing Ayers' and Wyatt's own compositions.
Ayers' were prototypes for the quirky but oddly philosophical songs for which he later became known; Wyatt was already writing about the minutiae of his daily life, both were singing, in their different ways, in very English accents, providing that it was possible to sing in a rock band without affecting a mid-Atlantic drawl.

While Wilde Flower had much of Brian’s attention in it, a few years back he had the desire to make a new recording based upon original material they used to play, and with original members.
It was almost impossible to get all the members together to develop together the material, so instead Brian used his own multi-tracked recordings resulting from Wilde Flowers and solo material and then invited the guests to contribute.
