The Wild Wild West was not cancelled due to ratings.
In 1885, James West comes out of retirement in Mexico to reunite with his old partner, Artemus Gordon (now an actor with the Deadwood Shakespearian Strolling Players travelling tent show), to stop the diabolical plans of Miguelito Loveless Jr., the son of their old adversary.

When it was cancelled at the end of the 1969 season, it was not because of poor ratings, but because of network attempts to reduce the amount of violence on the tube.
West, on the other hand, has a tendency to "shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more, and, when everyone's dead, try to ask a question or two." The threat to Grant comes from Arliss Lovelace, a southern gentleman who lost both legs during the war and holds a serious grudge.
Those looking for West to be the dashing, charismatic hero of the TV series will find his prowess considerably diminished.

His first mistake was casting one-trick-pony Will Smith in the Conrad role; reimagining James West as a "person of color" was a great idea (Conrad himself had suggested Jackie Chan), but Smith's lackluster presence and incessant mugging for the camera grow tiresome, as usual, after five minutes.
While sometimes that can be a good thing when the source material is as good as Wild Wild West you get diminishing returns the further you move away from the source.
