Backpacker.com - Friends Of Tuckerman Ravine On The Scene- Print View
Call it what you want, but Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire's White Mountains is steeped in alpine history, from skiing speedsters who blazed over the heart-dropping Headwall during the American Inferno races in the 1930s, to weekend warriors of today who'll slide down on anything from sleds to inflatable dolls.
To raise dollars, Friends is resurrecting the pioneering spirit of the Ravine's racing history with "Son of Inferno." This race, set for April 21, 2001, takes on a decidedly new-millennium angle by transforming it from mere skiing race to a run-kayak-bike-hike-ski race with the ski component ripping right over the Headwall.
Risch has hiked up nearly 600 times and spent 30-plus years working at nearby Wildcat Ski Area, while Ray is a U.S. snow ranger with 40 years on the hill.
