Less melodic than her previous albums, the arrangements were also more challenging and the material self-analytical to an almost alarming degree.
The strength of the album lay in the powerful arrangements courtesy of Tom Scott, and guitarist Robben Ford, plus Mitchell's own love of jazz rhythms, most notably on her amusing version of Annie Ross' Twisted.
The album deserved the highest acclaim, but was greeted with a mixed reception on its release, which emphasized how difficult it was for Mitchell to break free from her ‘acoustic folk singer’ persona.

For starters, the shot of Judy Collins on "Wildflowers" is probably my favorite album cover and the music inside matches the tranquil field of yellow flowers it displays.
Collins started out as one of the premier interpretive folksingers of her generation, along with Joan Baez, but by the time this 1967 album was released she was becoming much more of a vocal artist.
The only substantial complaint against "Wildflowers" is that the album is just a little more than a half-hour long, which means you could have combined it with either the album that came before it, "In My Life," or after it, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," to come up a more substantial CD.

On her 20th album, Mitchell forgoes the outer reaches of Mingus's jazz in favor of interpreting more traditional American vocal pop.
Although some critics still chose to see her primarily as a songwriter rather than a vocalist, there were already signs of important development on her third album, 1970's Ladies Of The Canyon.
