Wildland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ecologists assert that wildlands promote biodiversity, that they preserve historic genetic traits and that they provide habitat for wild flora and fauna that may be difficult to recreate in zoos, arboretums or laboratories.
Wildlands can be found in officially designated wilderness areas of the United States, as well as in preserves, estates, farms, conservation preserves, ranches, National Forests, National Parks and even in urban areas along rivers, gulches or otherwise undeveloped areas.
Wildlands are known as Native bush or "the bush" in Australasia.

Wildland Fire Threat to Homes - Jack Cohen
Current strategies for wildland fuel reduction may be inefficient and ineffective for reducing home losses, for extensive wildland fuel reduction on public lands does not effectively reduce home ignitability on private lands.
The threat of life and property losses during wildland fires is a significant issue for Federal, state, and local agencies that have responsibilities involving homes within and adjacent to wildlands.
Thus, the wildland fire threat to homes is better defined by home ignitability, an ignition and combustion consideration, than by the location and behavior of potential wildland fires.

NOVA Online | Fire Wars | Outfitting Wildland Firefighters | PBS
Wildland firefighter gear is designed to strike a series of delicate, life-or-death balances.
It must be heavy-duty enough to protect its wearer from the searing heat of 1000°F flames, yet it must also be breathable, cool, and lightweight enough to allow firefighters to dig, chop, shovel, and lug heavy equipment without feeling overly encumbered.
Likewise, a wildland firefighter's gear must be all-inclusive, with every possible tool at the ready that he or she could need while working in remote areas, yet all of this must be 100 percent portable by its wearer -- you can only use what you can carry.

However, wildland fire is also a natural process, and its suppression is now recognized to have created a larger fire hazard, as live and dead vegetation accumulates in areas where fire has been excluded.
They are used by fire and land managers to assess the condition of all vegetation throughout the growing season, so they provide a foundation for planning for fire suppression, scheduling prescribed burns, or studying long-term vegetation changes resulting from human or natural factors.
They use these data for purposes such as establishing priorities across the area for prevention activities to reduce the risk of wildland fire ignition and spread, and planning the allocation of suppression forces to improve the probability that initial attack will control fires occurring in areas of high concern.
