After the war Wilf continued to turn on the style, culminating in 1947, in what is now known as 'The Mannion Match'.
Wilf was not happy with this situation and his determination to get away turned in to a mini strike.
One memory that I will never forget is seeing Wilf stood alone on the balcony beneath the twin towers of Wembley, thousands of Boro fans singing "There's only one Wilf Mannion", a memory which brought a tear to my eye.

Wilfred ("Wilf") James Mannion (May 16, 1918 - April 14, 2000) was a footballer who signed professional forms for Middlesbrough on 17th September 1936 and played for them until 1954, scoring 110 goals in 368 appearances.
On April 14, 2000, Wilf Mannion died in hospital, at the age of 81.
Mannion was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2004 in recognition of his impact on the English league.

In January 1940, his career was interrupted by the war and he went off to France, only to return five months later in the famous retreat from Dunkirk.
