Lucas also tried his hand at screenwriting and directing and survived the transition into "talkies" in a career that spanned 32 remarkable years and 375 films.

Wilfred Lucas, born January 30, 1871 in the Province of Ontario, Canada - died December 5, 1940 in Los Angeles, California, United States, was a stage and film actor, a film director, and a screenwriter.
While working at Biograph Studios, Wilfred Lucas met and ultimately married actress/screenwriter Bess Meredyth (1890-1969) with whom he had a son.

Long has a break planned and he is caught, due to a mistake by Laurel and Hardy, but they get away, don flface makeup and try to hide in a community of cotton-pickers (during this sequence they do a lovely song and dance number with Hardy's voice being featured).
Their freedom is short and it's back in to prison until Long starts a riot and the boys help to end it, again inadvertently (as they did most of their brave deeds).
Lucas wishes them well and hopes they can return to what they were doing before coming to jail.
