List was born in Oberkirchberg on May 14, 1880, into a doctor's family.
List climbed the ladder in the Reichswehr becoming a Lieutenant General in 1932 and gaining command of the Fourth Army three years later.
A Generaloberst by 1939, List lead the Fourteenth Army in the invasion of Poland and commanded the Twelve Army's assault on France in 1940.

The defendant Maximillian von Weichs became ill during the course of the trial and, after it had been conclusively ascertained that he was physically unfit to appear in court before the conclusion of the trial, his motion that the proceedings be suspended as to him was sustained.
Attacks on German troops and acts of sabotage against transportation and communication lines progressively increased throughout the summer of 1941 and even at this early date the shooting of innocent members of the population was commenced as a means of suppressing resistance.
It was evident from the record that the appointment was intended as a temporary one for the period of the illness of Fieldmarshal List.

 The Wilhelm Scream
After learning the significance of the scream while it was being put into "Reservoir Dogs" (1992), Quentin Tarantino called a break from its mix so that he and his sound crew could crowd into a nearby room with a small TV to watch "Distant Drums" on a local station to hear the scream.
When Peter Jackson was told the history of the Wilhelm during the sound mix of "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002), he was so excited it was included that he had its volume raised - and insisted that it also be used in "Return of the King" (2003).
One of the papers was a short list of names of actors who were scheduled to come in to perform various lines of dialogue for miscellaneous roles in the movie.
