Wilhelm Marstrand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vilhelm Nikolaj Marstrand (December 24, 1810-March 25, 1873), painter and illustrator, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark to Nicolai Jacob Marstrand, mechanic and inventor, and Petra Ottilia Smith.
Marstrand is one of the best known artists belonging to the Golden Age of Danish Painting.
Although Marstrand's interests had a firm hold in genre themes-- depiction of the daily life he observed around him in Copenhagen's streets, especially middle class society-- he reached for the pinnacle of Academic acceptability: the history painting.

Wilhelm Marstrand's study is of exceptionally high quality and thus asserts itself as an independent work of art far superior to the usual classroom paintings; its pronounced sensual character makes it almost restrained and placid nude studies.
Wilhelm Marstrand's nude study contributes to widen the concept and breadth of Eckersberg's school of life painting, which at this early stage would appear to have been unique in Europe.

 Golden Age of Danish Art
Rightly, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853) has been called the father of Danish painting, for it was he who tied together the diverse strands of Danish and foreign artistic traditions and bequeathed this fusion to his students, enabling them to climb to high levels of artistic achievement.
Marstrand's The Waagepetersen Family (1836) is characteristic: it is a rich, vividly coloured group portrait of the wife, children and family nurse of the Copenhagen merchant Christian Waagepetersen, happily playing with one another in their sitting-room, the folk dress of the nanny adding a strong note of local colour and genre interest.
Marstrand's paintings became the most popular paintings of the nineteenth century in Denmark and even at the turn of the twentieth century the art critic Karl Madsen could still call Marstrand `the greatest genius in Danish painting.

In Scene of Country Life (1843), painted as a set subject for the Kunstakademi, Marstrand took as his theme a scene from Erasmus Montanus, a play by the 18th-century Danish poet and playwright Ludvig Holberg.
His stay in Venice in 1853–1854 was particularly important; his studies there of the great Venetian painters improved his understanding of the handling of colour, as seen clearly in the many historical and religious paintings of his last years.
Marstrand’s paintings have a certain facetiousness which often obscures a much deeper philosophical content.
