  SS-Standartenführer Wilhelm Mohnke
Wilhelm Mohnke was born in Lübeck Germany on 15 March 1911.
Mohnke has never been brought to trail for these allegations, and when the case was reopened in 1988 a Germen prosecutor came to the conclusion that their is insufficient evidences to bring charges.
It was not to be though, and Mohnke was relieved of his command and transfered to the the replacement battalion on 16 March 1942.

Wilhelm Mohnke, who died in 2001 in Germany after failed efforts by Canadian investigators to have him tried for war crimes, was accused of committing the single worst battlefield atrocity in Canada's military history: the execution of 35 soldiers captured shortly after the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.
Mohnke was also accused of ordering the deaths of 80 British captives in France in 1940 and 72 unarmed American soldiers in Belgium in 1944.
Downfall's director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has responded that Mohnke's alleged crimes were never proved and that the characters and events in the film were scrupulously researched and based on scholarly accounts of the Nazi regime as it was imploding at the war's end.

Two articles today suggest to me that there are still a lot of people out there who don’t get, or at least don't agree with, this concept.
But by Cesarani’s and Longevich’s arguments, we would expect Mohnke to brutalize his soldiers, his wife and children along with Allied soldiers – because, after all, he was a brutal monster.
As Hirschbiegel says, thinking of these people as monsters teaches us nothing; we have to understand them as human beings if we hope to prevent their like from emerging ever again.

We are not told that Schenck had earlier served in the Waffen-SS on the eastern front or that, more damningly, after the war Munich University refused to reinstate him to his chair because he was implicated in the conduct of "frivolous" medical experiments on inmates in Mauthausen concentration camp.
In one dramatic encounter, Mohnke protests to Goebbels against the pointless sacrifice of aged militia men.
Yet this fabrication goes to the heart of the film's mission, which is to depict the German people as the last victims of Nazism whose true defenders were a band of brave German soldiers, including SS men, who fought until overwhelmed by the Bolshevik hordes.

Prof Cesarani said: "As for [Wilhelm] Mohnke, I never thought I would see a film that portrayed sympathetically a man who was responsible for a massacre of British troops outside Dunkirk; just one of the things he did."
But the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, said at a discussion in London: "We decided anything you saw in the film had to be based on actual accounts.
Hirschbiegel added that it had never been proved that Mohnke was responsible for a massacre of British men.
