Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867-1942), born two years after Sibelius and Nielsen, was a prolific composer of folk-influenced songs and piano miniatures, but more fearsomely a Stockholm critic as acerbic as Berlioz had been in Paris.

Wilhelm Stenhammar, born in Stockholm on 7 February 1871, is the third of the triumvirate of Nordic composers who dominated their nation's music at the end of the nineteenth century and into the first decades of the twentieth: Sibelius in Finland, Nielsen in Denmark, Stenhammar in Sweden.

In the case of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s Fifth (and final) Symphony (1932-33) and Violin Concerto (which took him 16 years to compose, 1912-28), technique is solidly Germanic, as befits studies at Dresden and later on a three-year tenure teaching at that city’s Music Institute.
His gods were Grieg and Wagner, although the latter figured very little in P-B’s music, as he came to be known when he returned to Sweden in 1895 as new music critic of Stockholm’s all-powerful Dagens Nyheter – a post he occupied for the next 35 years.

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867-1942) was most loved for his folk music-inspired songs and his three collections of Frösöblomster (Flowers from Fröso Island), with their finely sculpted piano pieces permeated with folklore feelings.
In contrast to these often romantic ecstatics, Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) seems a sober and business-like classicist, whose technical skill and safe, aristocratic taste place him in a category of his own.
His six string quartets are exceptional and his two symphonies and two piano concertos masterful, as is the almost impressionistically glowing orchestral serenade.

 Von Otter deftly bridges vastly differing styles
That was especially true in the opening sets of Swedish songs, two attractive but rather foursquare offerings by Wilhelm Peterson-Berger and three songs by Wilhelm Stenhammar that were considerably more interesting.
The encores began with an unnervingly gorgeous account of "Take It With Me" by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, and concluded with another Peterson- Berger song, ("Aspaker Polka"), and "Light as a Summer Butterfly" by Benny Andersson of Abba fame.
She is also, for all her charm, a fairly reticent presence on stage, and some of her performances made more of an impression on the head than the heart.
