For his military achievements, Leeb was made Member of the Max-Joseph-Orden, the royal bavarian equivalent of the KBE, in 1916, meaning personal nobility and the addition of the title Ritter (knight) to his name.
Hitler was not fond of von Leeb due to his anti-Nazi attitudes and religious convictions and resigned him in 1938 after promoting him to the rank of colonel general, but reactivated him in July, when Leeb was made commander of the 12.
In January 1942, von Leeb was relieved of his command and it was officially announced that he had stepped down voluntarily due to illness.

Whatever the Wehrmacht command's affinity for the Nazi conception of Volksgemeinschaft,[3] whatever the extent to which the Ostheer would truly become 'Hitler's Army" in the years ahead with its willingness to condone or participate in murderous excesses,[4] it is clear from Hitler's statements that he maintained profound distrust of the senior command throughout the war.

Standing Fast: German defensive doctrine on the Russian front during world war II
General Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb (later to command Army Group North during Operation Barbarossa in 1941) wrote a series of historical articles on defensive operations in Militärwissenschaftliche Rundschau in 1936 and 1937.
Leeb further stressed that the tried defensive principles of the Great War--depth and counterattack--could still be effective in modern battles of maneuver.
Field Marshal von Bock discerned the threat that these attacks posed to Army Group Center, Bock had no desire to see his units ground up piecemeal in battles of attrition and preferred instead to resume the fluid battles of maneuver that had earlier characterized the campaign.

Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Paulus (23 September 1890, Breitenau – 1 February 1957, Dresden) was a German general, later promoted to field marshal, during World War II.
Against his better judgment, he followed Adolf Hitler\'s orders to hold the Army\'s position in Stalingrad under all circumstances, even after his forces were completely encircled by the enemy.
A relief effort by Army Group Don under Field Marshal von Manstein failed, inevitably, as insufficient force was available to challenge the Soviet forces encircling the German 6th Army \, and because by the time of this rescue attempt, Paulus\' remaining armour had only sufficient fuel remaining for a 12 mile advance anyway.
