Wilhelm Scherer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wilhelm Scherer (April 26, 1841 - August 6, 1886), German philologist and historian of literature, was born at Schönborn in Lower Austria.
Scherer's literary activity falls into three categories: in Vienna was the philologist, at Strassburg the professor of literature and Berlin the author.
This work is distinguished by the clearness with which details are co-ordinated with general and comprehensive survey of German literature from the beginning to the death of Goethe.

H-Net Review: Hoi-eun Kim on Adler und Halbmond: Bismarck und der Orient 1878-1890
According to Scherer, Bismarck was a faithful follower of the traditional Prussian neutrality regarding the Orient, though he was also very eager to take advantage of the situational change in the Ottoman Empire in order to strengthen Prussian power, as was the case during the Crimean war.
According to Scherer, Bismarck's move from the "not-too-close" stance to this "not-too-far" approach to Turkish relations in 1881 and 1882 was also based on the frustration of his initial and most desirable plan: that of persuading Britain and Turkey to conclude a formal alliance between them (p.163).
Scherer's work is clearly on this track but by and large it does not surpass the confines of a traditional diplomatic history.

And since he was a lyric poet, it is perhaps natural that the sorrows which concerned him personally should find most frequent expression in his verse.
But notwithstanding the fact that this personal element is very prominent in Hoelderlin's writings, Scherer's judgment is correct when he states: "Die Grundstimmung war eine tiefe Verbitterung gegen die Versunkenheit des Vaterlands."[40] The reason is not far to seek, especially when we consider the impossible demands of the poet's extravagant idealism.
