The Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the movie Distant Drums.
The scream was most likely vocalized by actor-singer Sheb Wooley, who later had a number one pop hit with the novelty song "Purple People Eater." It has been featured in dozens of movies since.
Alongside a certain recording of the cry of the Red-tailed Hawk, the "Universal telephone ring" [1], the Goofy holler and "castle thunder," it is probably one of the most well-known cinematic sound clichés.

Colby Cosh compared the Dean Scream to the Wilhelm Scream.
A series of short painful screams performed by an actor were recorded in 1951 for the Warner Brother's film "Distant Drums." They were used for a scene where a man is bitten and dragged underwater by an alligator.
Some of the Wilhelm Scream credits include Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies (and the Christmas TV special!), Reservoir Dogs, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and lots more.

In "A Star is Born" (1954), the scream is heard twice - one of the times because a scene with the scream in "Charge at Feather River" is playing in a screening room.
After learning the significance of the scream while it was being put into "Reservoir Dogs" (1992), Quentin Tarantino called a break from its mix so that he and his sound crew could crowd into a nearby room with a small TV to watch "Distant Drums" on a local station to hear the scream.
Although the "signature" or "classic" screams, takes 4 through 6 on the original recording, are the most recognizable, all of the screams are referred to as "Wilhelm" by those in the sound community.

Wilhelm Scream is also a pretty good punk/hardcore-ish band as well...but this clip is much better than the band.
All I know is that I always seem to hear this "yeeeeeaaaaarrrrgh" scream everywhere that I originally though was the wilhelm scream because it was the one scream I would recognize everywhere, only to find out now that the wilhelm scream is something I never recognize.

Prior to being adopted by the Lucas team in 1977, the Wilhelm got its shot in Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch in 1967 and co-starred with Judy Garland in 1954's A Star is Born.
There's a character in the movie named Wilhelm, and at one point in the movie he's riding along and an arrow flies in and hits him in, in the leg at which point he does this now-famous scream.

A Wilhelm Scream is a band I've always had mixed feelings about because Mute Print is both incredibly strong but also has some parts that I just can't get into, but I was pleasantly surprised by the live show.
Wilhelm beats all these band's asses, I saw saw this tour in Frisco...the Larry Arms are pretty damn mediocre if you ask me, not to mention the fake stage balls with all the drinking, I hope at least a couple members get liver pserosis and get to looking really old soon.
Because, beyond all the technical shit, A Wilhelm Scream is just a mediocre band with a lot of flashy guitar work and a contrived live show (I've seen them twice and stand by this statement).

If I remember correctly, it's screamed by one of the skiff guards at the Sarlacc in Jedi, by the guy who falls off the truck in Raiders, and by that Mola Ram guy at the end of Temple of Doom.
Hearing the Wilhelm here kinda took me out of the movie for a bit, because I was so utterly surprised to hear it in a Lord of the Rings movie.
I know it mostly as the scream from the Stormtrooper in ANH (before Luke and Leia swing over the chasm), and have it on my computer because of Shadows of the Empire.

Fazit: Irgendwo zwischen Hot Water Music und Strike Anywhere haben "A Wilhelm Scream" mit RUINER ein teilweise überzeugendes, teilweise aber auch zu verspieltes Album abgeliefert.

In the 1951 Warner Brothers flick Distant Drums, one of the characters crossing a swamp gets eaten by an alligator, and his somewhat ridiculous scream was overdubbed during the editing process.
Oddly enough, the same sound effect appeared throughout films to follow, and this was actually noticed down the line by sound designer Ben Burtt (who had borrowed the scream from another film for a project he worked on in 1974).
Needless to say, You Tube has a medley of the many multiple appearances of the scream in one swoop.
