The area that became the original Wilkes County was called the New Purchase or Ceded Lands, referring to the land lying between the Broad and Savannah rivers, which today includes Elbert and Lincoln counties, as well as parts of Oglethorpe, Taliaferro, and Warren counties.
Wilkes County is named for John Wilkes, a colorful member of British Parliament who opposed some of the British policies that eventually led to the American Revolution (1775-83).
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the population of Wilkes County is 10,687 (55.1 percent white, 43.1 percent fl, and 2.0 percent Hispanic).

In 1777, the county was laid out, though over the next few decades the boundaries of the county changed several times.
Wilkes County residents held their first court in 1779 to try "several persons whom [the grand jury] had cause to believe, have acted in conjunction with, and have aided, abetted, and assisted the British, and the avowed enemies of the United States." The court found guilty and sentenced to hang nine people, most for treason.
In 1824, Wilkes County seemed to be one of the wealthiest counties in the state based on their tax payments.
