County, near the geographic center of Georgia, was established in 1803 from territory between the Oconee and Ocmulgee rivers ceded by the Creek confederation.
The county was named for General James Wilkinson, a veteran of the American Revolution (1775-83) and one of the federal commissioners who negotiated the Creek cessions.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the population of Wilkinson County was 10,220 (58 percent white, 40.7 percent fl, and 1 percent Hispanic).

Wilkinson, who served in the American Revolution and War of 1812, was the first governor of the Louisiana Territory (1805-1807).

William R. Mackey was the son of William G. Mackey and a daughter of a Creek chief, presumably Hopoie Micco, one of the signers of the Treaty of Fort Wilkinson, in 1802.
Fort Wilkinson itself appears to have been the same as or near Elijah Clarke's Fort Defiance, from which in 1794 he established the short-lived Transoconee Republic until confronted by both the U.S. Army and the Georgia militia.
Thomas County, Georgia, census returns over several decades show that both Allen Spears and Sarah Ridley were born about 1821, therefore the Allen Spears born in 1782 would be of a previous generation, possibly the father of the Allen Spears who married Sarah Ridley.

General Ambrose R. Wright ordered his Brigade, the 3rd, 22nd, and 48th Georgia Regiments and the 2nd Georgia Battalion, to advance from Seminary Ridge across that mile of open ground to attack the enemy first at the Codori Farm on the Emmitsburg Road and then at the stone wall on Cemetery Ridge.
Briefly the Third Georgia flag, shown above, was planted upon that ridge and our Georgians held the key to this battle, maybe even the War and their independence, for they had broken the Union line.
