Topographically, it is the elongated alluvial plain of the Willamette River watershed basin, and is oriented north-south along the 123° West Meridian.
The overall aspect of the valley is northerly, originating in the vicinity a few miles south of Eugene, Oregon (44 °N, 123°W), and terminating at the confluence of the Willamette River with the Columbia River at Portland, Oregon (45°-44'N, 122°-45'W).
Though the Willamette Valley is only a small portion of the total landmass of the State of Oregon, it nonetheless is the population and economic center of the State.

 Willamette Stone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Willamette Stone was a small stone obelisk originally located in the western hills of Portland, Oregon in the United States.
It marked the intersection and origin of the Willamette Meridian and Willamette Baseline, which defined the grid system of sections and townships from which all real property in the states of Oregon and Washington has been measured following the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850.
Baseline Road in Washington County, and Meridian Road in Clackamas and Marion counties, are so named because their alignment lies mostly along the Willamette Baseline and Willamette Meridian, respectively.

Under the guidance of John B. Preston, the first Surveyor General of Oregon, the meridian was adopted in 1851 and is located on Skyline Boulevard four miles northwest of Portland, Oregon.
From these surveyed lines, the lands of the Northwest were divided into townships six miles square beginning at the Willamette Base Line numbering north or south and given a range beginning at The Willamette Meridian numbering east and west.
The best source that we've found regarding the history of the Willamette Meridian is in the 1973 Treasures of the Oregon County, the first of several volumes on Oregon by Maynard C. Drawson.

It was the origin of all the land surveys in the Oregon Territory.

The goal of this project is to photograph all of the Principal Meridians at their corresponding Base Lines and post them here.
All of these initial points are historically significant as most of the land in the United States is referenced to one or another of them.
In 1785 Congress enacted a law stating that the land in the new States were to be surveyed by a grid system consisting of townships 6 miles square and the said townships were to start at a principal meridian and its base line.

After exploring the area, Preston selected this site so the primary north-south survey line (Willamette Meridian) would pass west of Vancouver Lake and primary east-west survey line (Base Line) would not cross the Columbia River.
Preston's original marker - a wooden stake - was replaced in 1885 by a stone monument which became known as the Willamette Stone.

The McDonald-Dunn Research Forest consists of approximately 11,250 acres of predominantly forested land on the western edge of the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and on the eastern foothills of the Coast Range.

Founded in 1842 on the Willamette River, it was originally a resting place, halfway between the original capital, Oregon City, and the then Fort Vancouver (both of these towns are now considered suburbs).
The other zero-point is the Willamette River, a once beautiful waterway that divides Portland into east and west.
The north south line was chosen because it ran straight through the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers.

The Perpendicular "Willamette Meridian" goes due north to the Canadian border, and due south to the California state line.
Unfortunately, in the 1980s the stone was vandalized and there is no record in the NGS datasheet that the horizontal control was preserved when the present disk and concrete base was put in to replace the stone.
This is a truly moving experience to stand at the intersection of the base line and ist meridian for all of Washington and Oregon.

I am confused about aliquot parts, and would appreciate help to find just where this land actually is. The patentees were James and Ellen Casey.
There were 3 aliquot parts, all in Township 5-S, Range 1-W, Willamette Meridian, Marion County.
The remark listed was Lot 3 of S Half of SW Aliquots 1 and 2 were in Sec./Block 6.
