The university was founded as the Oregon Institute in the days of the Oregon Territory by the missionary Jason Lee, who had arrived in the territory in 1834 and had founded the Indian Manual Labor Institute for the education of the local Native Americans.
Willamette was one of the last universities in the nation to hold an annual singing and marching competition between the undergraduate classes.
The University motto is Non nobis solum nati sumus, which is Latin for "Not unto ourselves alone are we born".

 Pearl Harbor Exhibit: Football Team Stranded
When news of the attack on Pearl Harbor was broadcast on radio Sunday, some of the first fears for Oregonians were for the Willamette University football team and fans in Honolulu.
The Willamette team and fans from Salem were waiting outside the Moana Hotel for a bus tour to take them on a sightseeing tour of the island and a picnic.
As fl oily smoke filled the air the team and their supporters realized they were witnesses to a momentous event.
