Brown was a fan favorite in the Puerto Rican winter leagues where he was nicknamed "Esse Hombre" meaning "the man!" Brown won the Puerto Rican batting title 3 straight years ('47-'50) and had home runs totals of 18, 16 and 14 in the short season.
Brown has something of a second career when he signed with Dallas of the Texas League in 1953 and, with his booming bat, became one of the most popular players in Minor League history.
Brown was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2006.

Willard E. Brown pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and common-law robbery in the attack on Deborah Sykes in downtown Winston-Salem.
Brown received a sentence of 10 years for the robbery charge, to be served in addition to the life sentence.
The police knew that Brown had been identified by the victim in the second downtown rape as early as 1985, but they mistakenly thought that he was in prison the day of Sykes' murder, and did not pursue him as a suspect in her death.

Willard Brown, the man who confessed 2 1/2 years ago to killing Deborah Sykes in downtown Winston-Salem in 1984, has refused an interview request from a committee reviewing how police investigated the case.
Brown is the latest in a series of people involved in the case who have refused to speak to investigators assigned to the committee.
"Willard Brown is key to many parts of this review, particularly the issues of the other rapes that appear to be related," he said.

Brown's 1942 and 1943 stats may or may not be effected by this and the short WW2 deadball era that lasted from 1942 and into 1946.
Brown's case is very difficult for the translator because of two features of his career that have no direct parallel in a major-league career: the walk rate issue and the multi-league issue.
