The Willard InterContinental Washington is a historic luxury hotel located equidistant from the White House and the National Mall in Washington, DC.
The Willard family sold its share of the hotel in 1946, and due to mismanagement the hotel closed in 1968.
Many United States presidents have frequented the Willard, and every president since Franklin Pierce, including George W. Bush, has either slept in or attended an event at the hotel at least once; the hotel is hence also known as "the residence of presidents".

Henry Willard, in partnership with his brothers over the years, bought the hotel in the mid-1800s, uniting six two-story and attic houses behind one facade.
The Willard was a temporary home to President Calvin Coolidge, who was waiting to move into the White House, and has been called the "Residence of Presidents" because so many have either stayed at the opulent hotel or at least attended functions there.
