Metcalf's vision of "summerland"—a world of perpetual sunshine and perfect repose—was not just another pretty concept; instead, it epitomized his spiritualist concept of the afterlife.
Dating to the prime of Metcalf's career, when he produced some of his most beautiful autumn paintings, the canvas was executed in fall 1922, when he was staying in the little stone village in Chester, Vermont.

Metcalf’s first professional art instruction was his early apprenticeship to a wood, engraver.
Metcalf worked and taught in New York City, but is best remembered for his Impressionist landscapes of New England, and his involvement in the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

Not only was Willard Metcalf a good painter who played a significant role in the development of the art of his time, but he touched upon the way people felt about the American landscape in all of its variety.
Like many of his colleagues, Metcalf started his career as a wood engraver, and after a short apprenticeship with the noted landscapist, George Loring Brown, Metcalf attended the Boston Museum School, where he was one of its first scholarship students.
Willard L. Metcalf died in New York City in 1925.

Spanierman Gallery is still interested in locating works by Willard L. Metcalf and is also searching for unpublished letters, papers, diaries and photographs on this important American Impressionist.
Its purpose is to provide a major contribution to scholarship on the artist and to add to the body of greater knowledge on American art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
