  Willard Richards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Willard Richards (June 24, 1804–March 11, 1854) was an early leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and served as Second Counselor in the First Presidency to President Brigham Young in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1847 until his death in 1854.
Richards was ordained an Apostle on April 14, 1840 by Brigham Young.
Richards was incarcerated in Carthage Jail with Joseph Smith, Jr., Hyrum Smith and John Taylor on the 27th of June 1844 when the jail was attacked by a mob and the LDS prophet and his brother were murdered.

Richards uncorked the bottle, and presented a glass to Joseph, who tasted, as also Brother Taylor and the doctor, and the bottle was then given to the guard, who turned to go out.
Dr. Richards' escape was miraculous; he being a very large man, and in the midst of a shower of balls, yet he stood unscathed, with the exception of a ball which grazed the tip end of the lower part of his left ear.
