Schermerhorn kwam uit een familie, waarin aan de kerk 'niet werd gedaan' hoewel zijn moeder doopsgezind lidmaat was en hij catechisatie volgde bij de hervormde predikant te Grootschermer.
Vooral na het vertrek uit het ouderlijk huis in 1913 kreeg een algemeen christelijk-protestantse levensovertuiging terdege betekenis voor zijn denken.
Schermerhorns betekenis als pionier in de luchtkartering is onbetwist, terwijl zijn politieke rol dat vanzelfsprekend allerminst is gebleven.

Jacob Janse Schermerhorn evidently prospered as a fur trader and in 1649 is mentioned as an "importer" and possessing property which was "somewhat considerable." His enterprise evidently led him into taking advantage of all means available for the substantial increase of his possessions.
He claimed Ryntgens and Schermerhorn were guilty of a felony, and had them arrested and sentenced to banishment with the confiscation of all their property and goods.
East Nassau was at one time named Schermerhorn in honor of John W. Schermerhorn, and a district in Hudson, now a part of the city, but once lying to the east of it, was called Schermerhorn's, on account of the large holdings of another John Schermerhorn in that district.

He might again have become Prime Minister, but he failed to form the broad based cabinet of socialists, Catholic parties and liberals, which he deemed necessary to secure the corrections in the Constitution.

In September 1946, Schermerhorn, no longer prime minister, asked Sanders to become secretary-general of the Commissie-Generaal voor Nederlandsch-Indië, which Schermerhorn has been called upon by parliament to form in order to negotiate with the Indonesians.
The most important document among his papers is his diary covering the period of his tenure on the commission from September 1946 until July 1947.

In the election campaign Dr. Beel voiced the political resistance from the religious and liberal parties against the economic planning and socialism favoured by Prime Minister Schermerhorn and his political supporters.
van Schaik, a fellow KVP politician, took over and succeeded in forming a broad based cabinet by offering the socialist Willem Drees the function of Prime Minister, Schaik himself being satisfied with the function of Deputy Prime Minister.
Drees appointed Dr. Beel High Commissioner of the Crown in the Dutch East Indies (now named Indonesia), as a successor to Lieutenant Governor General Dr. Van Mook, a man of proven managerial abilities, who unwillingly had to resign.
