The South Willesborough Dykes area is on the west bank of the East Stour river is an area of sheep fields drained by dykes, the area is designated as the South Willesborough Dykes Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI).
The 'South Willesborough Dykes' have limited access to the public but are none-the-less important in terms of the geology of the area, being in the river floodplain and in supporting neutral, wet grassland species, along with Willesborough's Aylesford Green and Boys Hall form part off the Ashford Green Corridor.
The town is most famous for its classic windmill built in 1869 near Hythe Road and St Marys Church on Church Road, with one of the oldest ringing bells in Kent.

This confirms that this Charles is the correct one, as the daughter of Mercy who does not appear on this census was a Daisy Elizabeth SETTERFIELD who appears on the 1891 Census with her mother (see HONEYWOOD Chart 0300.
My sister has sent me information which ties in with what I have on the 1901 Census, but some of the birth places are different as she has them all as Willesborough, whereas on the Census, Mabel is down as born in Elmsted, which is where her mother was born.
On this Census Mabel is down as being born in Willesborough.

However, due to economic reasons (mainly labour costs) the chimney was demolished in 1909 and the steam engine removed in 1911, although the boiler and boiler house still remain to this day.
Willesborough Windmill, owned by Ashford Borough Council, is run by a Trust with an active 'Friends of Willesborough Windmill' organisation being responsible for the day to day running of the mill.
Although we are currently without sweeps to power the stones, the engine is coupled to the auxillary power shaft and we can grind flour once again - the first time since the early 1930's.

I regularly attended the Willesborough practices as a teenager and was soon introduced to the great man - nothing like I thought he would be.
He was always regarded as a valued member of the band which has kept its core of young ringers who were able to visit him at home, check on his welfare and exchange current ringing news with his experiences of 50 years ago.
This time we were upstairs in the cosy ringing gallery, installed about 10 years ago; a much warmer and pleasanter place to enjoy some 2hrs 53minutes of Yorkshire to the same composition as the 1954 peal.

Plants that are unlikely to be recorded anywhere else in Kent are found on the South Willesborough Dykes, these include marsh stitchwort, water violet and blue water speedwell.
