Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (April 15, 1721–October 31, 1765), a younger son of King George II of Great Britain and Queen Caroline, was a noted military leader.
Cumberland himself was in the midst of the column which penetrated the French centre, and his conduct of the inevitable retreat was unusually cool and skilful.
Cumberland told his troops to take notice that the Jacobite enemy's orders were to give no quarter to the "troops of the elector", and they took the hint to reciprocate; there is no evidence of any such orders.

Cumberland is in the northern circuit, and assizes are held at Carlisle.
Cumberland continued, however, to support the Stuarts; it was one of the first counties to welcome back Charles II.; in 1715 it was associated with the rising on behalf of the Pretender, and Carlisle was the chief seat of operations in the 1745 rebellion.
Cumberland returned three members for the county to the parliament of 1290, and in 1295 returned in addition two members for the city of Carlisle and two members each for the boroughs of Cockermouth and Egremont.

The last creation (the form being "Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale") was for Ernest Augustus (later King of Hanover), fifth son of King George III of the United Kingdom.
The title was suspended for the third Duke's pro-German activities during World War I. Under the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act, the lineal male heirs of the 3rd Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale have the right to petition the British Crown for the restoration of his peerages.

The Duke of Cumberland, second surviving son of King George II and Queen Caroline, was born at Leicester House at Charing, near London.
The Duke was still an opponent of Pitt and, when he was sent, in the beginning of 1757, to take command of the Hanoverian Army on the Weser, he insisted on his father's dismissing Pitt before he started.
Cumberland was now quite ready to be reconciled to his old antagonist, Pitt, and was successively the enemy of Bute and of George Grenville.

Later in 1745 Cumberland was recalled to England to oppose the invasion of England of the Jacobite forces under Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, grandson of the deposed king James II.
Cumberland's refusal to serve as commander in chief unless William Pitt was dismissed as Secretary of State led to Pitt's fall in April 1757.
Cumberland became ill in the summer of 1765 and died from a brain-clot on 31 October of the same year.
