 Barclay,William Books - Signed, used, new, out-of-print
Dr. Barclay examines The Letter of James - its auth-orship, its date, its curious omission of references to Jesus' resurrection and Messiahship, and the form in which it is cast - and shows that works and faith are both essential aspects of the apostolic message.
Barclay describes the various forms in which Gnosticism appeared in 1 John, pointing out that some of its postions, such as the notion that the material world, including the human body, is evil, still infect the thinking of some Christians.
William Barclay's rendering of the New Testament, first published in 1969, continues to be one of the freshest and most readable translations available.

Barclay is blurbed on the back as "one of the world’s great biblical scholars." If he’s one of the greatest, then the sad shape of Christianity today is no surprise, in my opinion.
Barclay finds this Pauline uniqueness "very surprising," but it escapes him to consider exploring further, or using as a sound basis for Biblical interpretation, so he immediately jumps onto his hobby-horse, the book of Revelation, in the next paragraph.
Regarding Bibliology, Barclay is one of the rankest of liberals, and he neatly skewers those who hold to weak notions of the inspiration of the Bible.

The Enigmatic William Barclay : ChristianCourier.com
Barclay repudiated the doctrine of the substitutionary nature of the death of Jesus.
Barclay believed that to literalize this statement was a “crude” approach to a passage that was merely an instance of the “poetry of love.” The real power of Jesus’ death, he suggested, was in its benevolent, selfless example—nothing more.
Barclay’s discussion of Christ’s “Golden Rule” is a masterpiece that demonstrates the originality of Jesus’ teaching—contrary to the claims of many modernists.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: William Barclay
Barclay published in 1600 his largest work, "De Regno et Ragali potestate", in defence of the rights of kings, against Buchanan and other writers.
After twenty-five years' tenure of his professorship, Barclay resigned his chair in 1603 and returned to England, where the new monarch, James I, was inclined to welcome with favour one who had so learnedly asserted the views on the Divine right of kings which he himself held.
Barclay's fidelity, however, to the Catholic religion stood in the way of his advancement, and, rejecting the king's offer of a lucrative appointment on condition that he renounced his faith, he returned to France.

After the defection, Houlding and Barclay were left with a football ground and no team, but together rapidly and successfully created a brand new one - Liverpool Football Club.
Barclay was the actual 'secretary-manager' of Liverpool Football Club during this period and had been involved at Liverpool before John McKenna, who seems to have acted as a 'coach-manager'.
The tremendous work achieved by Barclay should not be overlooked, as he was the organisational force that helped create the great 'Team of the Macs' and the early successes of the Club.
