William Barents - Arctic Explorers - All Things Arctic
The Barents Sea (formerly called the Murmean Sea) is an extension of the Arctic Ocean lying north of Norway and Russia.
In northern sections of the Barents sea, the average winter air temperature is -13° F, but the Russian port of Murmansk remains ice-free in winter, partly because of the North Cape Current.
The Dutch navigator William Barents, for whom the Barents Sea is named, is one of the more renowned of the early European explorers of the Arctic.

The Baldwin Project: A Book of Discovery by M. B. Synge
With these and other treasures Barents was now forced to return from these high latitudes, and he sailed safely into the Texel after three and a half months' absence.
In hazy weather they made their way north till on the 19th they saw land, and the "land was very great." They thought it was Greenland, but it was really Spitzbergen, of which he was thus the discoverer.
Barents himself was now too ill to walk, so they carried him to one of the little boats, and on 14th June 1597 the little party put off from their winter quarters and sailed round to Ice Point.

Some of the items he recovered were: the clock that had still been fastened to the wall, two copper ship’s cooking pots, a gun barrel, a chest with navigational instruments, candlesticks, drumsticks, and sea chests made into beds.
The Dutch and English governments then negotiated for the “Barents’ Relics” to be returned to the Netherlands.

Around the end of the 16th century, several expeditions tried to establish a North-East passage to Asia, but fog, pack-ice, and the confusing geography of the Russian coast proved consistently frustrating.
A Winter Away from Home is the marvelously vivid account of the ordeal faced by Barents and his 16-member crew, who were the first West Europeans to winter in the high Arctic and survive.
Barents died on the way home, but his voyage was meticulously recorded by one of the survivors.

Global energy hunger brings oil and gas boom to Arctic - Turkish Daily News Dec 19, 2006
With the world's known petroleum resources drying up, the inhospitable waters of the Barents Sea are a new frontier in the search for oil and gas.
The area, named after 16th century Dutch explorer William Barents, is one of the world's cleanest and richest fishing grounds, and has fragile cold weather ecology -- both of which environmentalists fear the hunger for oil could put at risk.
The value of what remains to be discovered in the Barents could test the relations of any neighbors, and Norway and Russia already routinely squabble over fishing rights in the far north.
