William Barton Rogers had three brothers: elder brother James Blythe Rogers, born in 1802; and younger brothers Henry Darwin Rogers, born in 1808, and Robert Empie Rogers, born in 1813.
William Barton Rogers attended William and Mary in the early 1820s, and after completing his work there (though it is unclear whether or not he actually graduated), William and his brother Henry moved back to Baltimore, nearer to their eldest brother James.
William became engaged to James Savage's eldest daughter, Emma, and William and Emma were married in 1849.

It could be that John Barton is not the name you are looking for if the book you mentioned is the only place you have seen John as the immigrant.

William Barton Rogers, 1804-1882, the founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was educated at the College of William and Mary but apparently did not receive a degree.
He was professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the College of William and Mary from 1828 until 1835, when he was elected to the chair of natural philosophy at the University of Virginia.
At about the same time he was appointed to lead the first geological survey of the state of Virginia, which he worked on for the next six years.

I have read five or six of Barton's (and co-authored) books, all were great, but this is my favorite so far.
He writes in a very intense emotional and physical style, I find myself saying to myself as I read, yes, this is how it really is! This is adult science fiction, not the superficial fluff such as Arthur C. Clarke writes.
Barton's writing style was too terse and austere for me - often starting a paragraph with a sentence fragment, and blowing through scenes with too little detail (unless there is anything sexual in it, which he never fails to mention).
