Some Archbishops of Dublin, by T. S. Lindsay
William Bedell was born in the year 1570 in the County of Essex.
Bedell, in his catechizing, expressed the opinion that the Church of Rome, though in error, was a true branch of the Catholic Church.
Bedell therefore was able to do something to remedy matters by exchanging some of his land, which was, in some cases, better suited for the building of a parsonage, for the inconvenient plot assigned.

Bedell rejected many of the usual trappings of his office in Trinity, favouring native clothing instead of the more formal attire of the establishment and travelling alone on horseback instead of using the coaches and retinue of the gentry.
The Catholic Bishop was unwilling to have the Protestant Bedell buried in Kilmore Churchyard, but O'Raghallaign's forces intervened and permission was given for him to be buried where Bedell himself had wished, alongside his wife Leah, in a grave underneath a giant sycamore tree, still standing in 2001, which the Bishop himself had planted.
Bedell's Old Testament was published after his death in 1685, by Archbishop Marsh, founder of the famous Marsh's Library which still stands adjacent to St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, and by Robert Boyle, the famous physicist and philosopher.

From at least 1276 one of two bedells was attached to the faculties of divinity and, until 1534, of canon law and the other to the faculty of arts.
By the late fourteenth century a third bedell is again found, apparently subsidiary to the other two, and there continued to be three esquire bedells until the death of George Leapingwell in 1863: the post of third bedell having been abolished in the new statutes of 1858.
The maces currently borne by the Esquire Bedells were presented by George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, in 1626; and the Yeoman Bedells mace, now carried by the Marshal, was presented by his successor as Chancellor, Henry Rich, Earl of Holland, in 1628.

It was in the collected works of James Ussher, in a letter written by William Bedell (1571-1642) to an interlocutor on the question of baptism.
Bedell was the Anglican Bishop of Kilmore in Ireland during the time that James Ussher was primate.
Bedell was strongly Puritan in his outlook and, in correspondence with another Puritan Anglican regarding baptism, he argued that the primary function of sacraments is covenant obsignation and that the absolution offered in infant baptism is only conditional and expectative, awaiting the child to come to faith at a later point.
