William Bernhardt created several likable and interesting series characters in addition to Ben Kincaid, and as the series has progressed, some have ben dropped and some have been added.
Bernhardt is capable of better, but I intend to avoid his writings like the plague.
Bernhardt's information about how many times people are found guilty of a crime, and then when new information comes out, it doesn't necessarily exonerate them or let them out of prison because of the way the justice system worked took me by surprise.

Bernhardt may resort to a B-movie ending with the real killer trying to evade capture by seizing the heroine around the neck (you just know that sucker's not going to make it out the door), but he's clearly having fun with the genre cliches and so will the reader.
Bernhardt is no humorist and his attempts at humor are pathetic.

Bernhardt has been building Kincaid's background and personality slowly and carefully, using dribs and drabs of those elements to cement an interesting and occasionally frustrating background to plots that have become more complex.
Bernhardt moves Kincaid and Christina McCall, Kincaid's law partner and erstwhile romantic interest, temporarily out of Tulsa and into Chicago, due to a case that seems unwinnable and a client who appears at once indefensible and reprehensible.
Bernhardt takes chances with his characters here and continues to grow and improve as a craftsman, making the reader the clear winner.

Bernhardt was clearly going for a change of pace by turning his attorney hero into a bumbling private investigator.
The results are a predictable murder mystery (I had it figured out halfway through the book) saved only by Bernhardt's wonderful, realistic characters, some scenes that had me laughing out loud and riveting action sequences that kept the novel moving at a speedy pace.

There has been a trend in recent years for “legal thrillers” to stay out of the courtroom and concentrate, rather on the crimes and criminals themselves – turning their lawyer heroes and heroines into more private investigators than attorneys.
In contrast, a good amount of Capitol Murder takes place firmly in the courtroom, and the authors uses his considerable talent for writing compelling and readable dialogue to make this some of the fastest paced fiction I have read in quite a while.

It is a fast paced novel that keeps you guessing until the end.
There are some parallelisms in the story with the OJ trial (football start accused of murder, mishandling of the crime scene, car chase through a highway, etc.) but Bernhardt keeps it interesting regardless.
I won't pretend that Bernhardt's books are Pulitzer candidates, but their zany cast of characters will enchant you!

The three mysteries (kidnapping, drill murder, and anti-gay murder) are cleverly intertwined, letting Bernhardt spring a new twist at every chapter hook and a couple of romances add human interest to the mix.
I did, however, find Bernhardt's reliance on coincidence to be a bit over the top.
Although I found the coincidences offputting, Bernhardt is such a capable story-teller that I still found the story captivating and entertaining.
