William Bradford, a Philadelphia native, was the son of patriot and printer William Bradford (1722-1791) and his wife Rachel Budd.
The younger Bradford began his formal education at the Philadelphia Academy, where he was a student from 1762 to 1765.
Bradford's connection with Penn, begun with his student days in the Academy, was renewed in 1781 when he was awarded an honorary A.M. from the University of the State of Pennsylvania.

The place was first settled about 1827; in 1838 it was laid out as a town and named Littleton; in 1858 the present name, in honour of William Bradford (1755-1795), was substituted; and Bradford was incorporated as a borough in 1873, and was chartered as a city in 1879.

Jonathan and William Edwards, when in Gilmanton, signed a petition "To His Excellency The President, The Honorable Senate, and The Honorable House of Representatives of the State of New Hampshire" praying that the courts of Strafford County be held at Norway Plain in Rochester instead of Dover and Dunbar.
