WILLIAM F., the leading meat merchant of Stonington, was born in Providence, R.I., April 19, 1857, son of James Broughton.
William F. Broughton was educated in Hope Valley and in a Bryant and Stratton business college of Providence.
Broughton do not regret their early start in life, and they are to be congratulated for their bright and most interesting trio of children.

Broughton, successfully crossed the treacherous bar at the mouth of the Columbia on October 19, 1792, but Vancouver’s larger ship Discovery was forced to turn back.
Broughton sailed the Chatham 10 or 15 miles up the Columbia to near the present location of Megler, Pacific County, then abandoned the attempt to navigate it through the river’s confusing channels.
According to Vancouver’s account of the expedition, Broughton concluded that the river probably did not extend much farther, and certainly could not be navigated farther.

Broughton's exploration of the Columbia by boat was reenacted in 1992 by Douglas Brooks, who constructed a replica of the Chatham's cutter and trained volunteers to row it upriver from the mouth of the Columbia to Broughton's easternmost point.
