  William C. DeMille
Though filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille was by far the most famous member of the DeMille clan, many of his contemporaries considered his older brother William C. DeMille to be the more talented director.
Affectionately referred to as "Pop" by his fellow workers, William eschewed Cecil's preoccupation with spectacle, concentrating instead on intimate stories with strong human values; as a result, he never displayed the awesome visual sense of his younger brother, but invariably "scored" in the emotional department.
William C. DeMille was the father of choreographer Agnes DeMille, who once provided a succinct epitaph for both her father and her more celebrated uncle: "Cecil spent his lifetime building up a legend.

 Cecil B. DeMille
DeMille was a born showman and had an innate sense of what the public would clamor for.
William was a superb artisan himself, yet a humble man of powerful instincts that leaned towards honesty, integrity and patience.
DeMille's actresses crawled through the mud, came in contact with wild animals, submitted to very revealing costumes (by Adrian, of course!) and various humiliations which they were all glad to do.

William De Mille produced and directed Miss Lulu Bett, a film of extraordinary conviction and insight.
It was then often the custom for unmarried women to lodge with family: thus, we discover Miss Lulu (Lois Wilson) in a boring Midwestern town, an exploited household drudge for her sister (Mabel Van Buren) and her overbearing brother-in-law (Theodore Roberts).

 William deMille
ONE of the notable film directors of today who does not agree that life is as hectic as some people believe, is William de Mille, whose subtle effects mark much of his work, as against the broader action so frequently injected into modern productions.
de Mille, who is a brother of Cecil DeMille, was born on July 25, 1878, at Washington, N. C., and began his career as a dramatist.
After obtaining the degree of bachelor of arts at Columbia University, taking a course at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, and studying for two years in Germany, he took a two-year post-graduate course under Brander Mathews in dramatic literature at Columbia University.

dOc DVD Review: Why Change Your Wife? / Miss Lulu Bett (1920/1921)
Cecil B. DeMille, long before he became known for biblical extravaganzas, made his name with a series of marital comedy/dramas for Famous Players-Lasky in the late teens and early 1920s.
The result, the second pairing of DeMille and Gloria Swanson, is a provocatively clever tale that is in many ways a reverse of Don't Change Your Husband, with Swanson this time getting the brunt of the trouble.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by Zona Gale, from her own novel, it's an often heart-rending look at the difficult situations that women of the period could find themselves in and a powerful statement for the rights of women.

 Features
Written by William C. DeMille (Cecil B.'s brother and Agnes' father), "The Woman" is an old-fashioned political potboiler, awash in sexual intrigue, schemes, and flmail.
Curiously, even DeMille's grandson, head of the late DeMille's estate, was unfamiliar with "The Woman." Existing only on microfilm at the New York Public Library, "The Woman" was transcribed by hand, once the Metropolitan Playhouse received permission to mount the work.
American theatre between the Civil War and World War I runs the gamut from drawing room comedy to pulp fiction dramas that are big on melodrama and sentiment, observes Zarko.

Though a significant hit in 1911, William C. deMille's political thriller The Woman was lost and just recently unearthed by The Metropolitan Playhouse.
Their fiery new production of the show proves that it is every bit as relevant and gripping today as it must have been 90 years ago.
This is one play where no one is innocent, the heroes and villains are almost always one and the same.
