William Canynge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canynges was five times mayor of Bristol, and twice member of parliament for Bristol.
In 1456 he entertained the queen, Margaret of Anjou, at Bristol, and in 1461 Edward IV.
Canynges undertook at his own expense the great work of rebuilding the famous Bristol church of St Mary, Redcliffe, and for a long time had a hundred workmen in his regular service for this purpose.

 Thomas Chatterton - LoveToKnow 1911
Canynge is represented as an enlightened patron of literature, and Rowley's dramatic interludes were written for performance at his house.
In order to escape a marriage urged by the king, Canynge retired to the college of Westbury in Gloucestershire, where he enjoyed the society of Rowley, and eventually became dean of the institution.
In " The Storie of William Canynge," one of the shorter pieces of his ingenious romance, his early history is recorded.

 Thomas Chatterton
His holidays were mostly spent at his mother's house; and much of them in the favourite retreat of his attic study there.
He had already conceived the romance of Thomas Rowley, an imaginary monk of the 15th century, and lived for the most part in an ideal world of his own, in the reign of Edward IV, when Master William Canynge --familiar to him among the recumbent effigies in Redcliffe church--still ruled in Bristol's civic chair.
Canynge is represented as an enlightened patron of literature, and Rowley's dramatic interludes were written for studies.

Rowley was a contemporary of William Canynge and Chatterton’s quill made him Canynge’s priest-secretary at St Mary Redcliffe.
With Rowley as his imaginary scribe, Chatterton deceived some colourful Bristol characters — the eccentric pewterer Catcott and the man-midwife William Barrett.
They both had the history of our city at heart; Barrett wrote The History and Antiquities of the City of Bristol, the first all-embracing study, but his eagerness to accept Chatterton’s fabrications tainted the book and he was ridiculed when it was published in 1789.
