William Cartwright (1611 - November 29, 1643), was an (An Indo-European language belonging to the West Germanic branch; the official language of Britain and the United States and most of the Commonwealth countries) English (Someone who writes plays) dramatist and churchman.
Cartwright was educated at the free school of (Click link for more info and facts about Cirencester) Cirencester, at (Click link for more info and facts about Westminster School) Westminster School, and at (Click link for more info and facts about Christ Church, Oxford) Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his M.A. degree in 1635.
Cartwright was the natural successor to (English dramatist and poet who was the first real poet laureate of England (1572-1637)) Ben Jonson and well thought of by his contemporaries.

Anthony a Wood, whose notice of Cartwright is in the nature of a panegyric, gives this account of his origin, which is probably correct, although it is contradicted by statements made in David Lloyds Memoirs.
He was educated at the free school of Cirencester, at Westminster school, and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his M.A. degree in 1635.
Cartwright was a son of Ben Jonson and an especial favorite with his contemporaries.

On the evening of 11th April 1812, William Cartwright's mill at Rawfolds was attacked by a Luddite mob of about 150 men led by George Mellor, who were intent on smashing the newly installed machinery.
In February 1812, a delivery of shearing frames destined for Cartwright's mill had been attacked and destroyed by Luddites as it crossed Hartshead Moor, and Cartwright and other mill-owners had been expecting trouble as weapons were stolen in various parts of the parish.
Cartwright had made careful plans to defend the mill – there was a guard dog, the main door was studded with iron, spiked rollers were ready for throwing down the stairs, and sulphuric acid was also at hand.

Stephen Cartwright settled in Riley Township, Putnam County, Ohio in 1836.
Dates from his family Bible were transcribed by his great-grandson, James Bliss Cartwright, into an unpublished document in September, 1949 entitled "To the Descendants of James Fleming Cartwright and Clarissa Cordelia Cartwright."
He reports having had a spell of Neuralgia that the "doctor said affected (my) liver and kidneys as well." The impact of these illnesses on his health continued until his death at age 59 years.
