The Most Noble William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (December 14, 1748 – July 29, 1811), was the eldest son of the 4th Duke of Devonshire by his wife the heiress Lady Charlotte Boyle, suo jure Baroness Clifford of Lanesborough, who brought in considerable money and estates to the Cavendish family.
However, the dukedom and estates passed eventually to a grandson of a younger brother of the 5th Duke; the 7th Duke had however married a daughter of the 6th Earl of Carlisle, and thus a granddaughter of the 5th Duke and niece of the 6th Duke.
George Lamb, a brother of the 2nd Viscount Melbourne (himself married to Lady Caroline Ponsonby or Lady Caroline Lamb, niece of the 1st wife of the 5th Duke).

When, in 1688, William was preparing for his invasion Bentinck went to some of the German princes to secure their support, or at least their neutrality, and he was also a medium of communication between his master and his English friends.
He married in 1766 Lady Dorothy Cavendish (1750-1794), daughter of the 4th duke of Devonshire, and was succeeded as 4th duke by his son WILLIAM HENRY (1768-1854), who married a daughter of the famous gambler, General John Scott, and was brother-in-law to Canning.
The duke of Portland was undoubtedly buried in Kensal Green cemetery in 1879.

The Most Noble William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire (April 27, 1808—December 21, 1891), was the great-grandson of the 4th duke and grandson of the 1st Earl of Burlington, whom he succeeded in that title in 1834, before succeeding his cousin in the Dukedom in 1858.
In 1829, he married a niece of the 6th duke, Lady Blanche Howard (1812 - 1840), daughter of the Earl of Carlisle.
Cavendish's three sons became Members of Parliament: Spencer, MP for Lancashire North 1857-91, led the Liberal Party and was asked three times to be Prime Minister by Queen Victoria; Frederick was MP for the West Riding and Chief Secretary for Ireland, assassinated in 1882; Edward was MP for Derbyshire West.
